U.S. Visa Interview Waiver Policy 2025: New Rules Effective September 2

Updated: Aug 13

USA VISA UPDATE 2025

The U.S. Department of State has announced a major update to the U.S. visa interview waiver policy 2025, which will take effect from September 2, 2025. These changes will impact most visa applicants, including those under the age of 14 and above 79, who were previously more likely to receive waivers.

🔹 What Is Changing Under the U.S. Visa Interview Waiver Policy 2025?

Starting September 2, in-person interviews will generally be required for all nonimmigrant visa applicants, regardless of age — unless they fall under specific exceptions.

Who Is Exempt Under the U.S. Visa Interview Waiver Policy 2025?

The following categories of applicants may still be eligible for an interview waiver:

  1. Diplomatic and Government-Related Visa Holders

    • Visa types: A-1, A-2, C-3 (excluding attendants, servants, or personal employees), G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4, NATO-1 to NATO-6, or TECRO E-1

    • These include diplomats, government officials, and representatives of international organizations.

  2. Applicants for Diplomatic or Official Visas

    • Those applying strictly for diplomatic or official purposes.

  3. B-1/B-2 Visa Renewal Applicants

    • Individuals renewing their full validity B-1, B-2, or B1/B2 visas (or Border Crossing Cards for Mexican nationals) within 12 months of expiry.

    • The applicant must have been at least 18 years old at the time of their previous visa issuance.

📝 Additional Eligibility Criteria for B-1/B-2 Renewals

To qualify for the interview waiver under the renewal category, applicants must also meet the following:

  • Apply from their country of nationality or residence

  • Never had a visa refusal (unless that refusal was overturned or waived)

  • Have no potential ineligibility or red flags in their case

🔔 Important: Even if you meet all conditions, consular officers still have the authority to request an in-person interview on a case-by-case basis.
